Taffety Punk presents the Car Plays, through Saturday About three years ago, Taffety Punk Theatre Company’s artistic director Marcus Kyd did a reading of “Dreamtrippin’,” a short play that takes place within the confines of an automobile.
That got Kyd to thinking: Why not a series of performances that take place in cars?
“I thought maybe somebody should do this,” Kyd said. However, he had one issue. “How can I justify doing one 25-minute play?”
Kyd found two more car-based performances, “Nebraska by Noon” and “Buggy and Tyler,” the latter written by resident writer Gwydion Suilebhan; and the Car Plays was born.
“The cars are what unifies everything,” Kyd said. “The thing about being in a car is what heightens the situations.”
Kyd said that the three works play off the limitations posed by having the players and the unfolding drama within the confines of an automobile.
“The space is limited,” Kyd said. “I’ve always been interested in anything that compresses time and space.”
