Chestnut, 35, failed to break the record he set last year of 74 hot dogs. “I was going for 75, I always love to get a new record,” Chestnut said after the contest. “I came out fast and then I slowed down faster than I would’ve liked.”
Chestnut has won Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest 12 times, while this year’s women’s winner, Miki Sudo, took her sixth title in a row after eating 31 dogs.
The Fourth of July competition took place on New York City’s Coney Island boardwalk, where hundreds of spectators wore hot dog hats and cheered on the competitors. The male champion takes home a mustard-yellow belt while the woman gets a Pepto-Bismol-pink belt.
