President Trump’s national security adviser H.R. McMaster said he doesn’t feel the need to discuss the ongoing investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election with American allies.
McMaster said on “Fox News Sunday” the investigation led by special counsel Robert Mueller doesn’t come up often in talks with allies.
“I don’t think our allies need any reassurance,” McMaster said when asked if he has to reassure allies that Trump would continue as president and his agenda won’t be derailed by the investigation.
“We haven’t missed a beat really, and the topic doesn’t even come up.”
Trump’s first national security adviser, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn, pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI Friday and became the first member of the Trump administration to be charged in Mueller’s investigation.
Trump has emphasized there’s no evidence of collusion between his campaign and the Kremlin.
McMaster said the investigation and Trump’s tweeting about the campaign is hardly a blip on his radar.
“That is not our focus on the National Security Council, obviously,” he said. “What we are focused on other key issues we have to confront today to protect the American people, advance our prosperity and the priorities the president has given us to move as quickly as we can to resolve this crisis with North Korea.”
