Disney confirms Harrison Ford will return to theaters as Indiana Jones for fifth film

Harrison Ford will be returning to theater screens for one more movie as Indiana Jones.

Disney confirmed the news on Thursday, announcing that the fifth and final installment about the adventures of the fictional professor of archaeology is scheduled to be released in July 2022. During an investor presentation, the company said that the film was currently in “pre-production.”

The last film in the franchise, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, was released in 2008. James Mangold, who recently directed Ford v Ferrari, has been picked to direct the new movie. The first four films, which started with 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark, were directed by Steven Spielberg.

In an interview with the Daily Telegraph in 2013, Ford expressed his willingness to participate in a fifth film.

“We’ve seen the character develop and grow over a period of time and it’s perfectly appropriate and okay for him to come back again with a great movie around him where he doesn’t necessarily have to kick as much a**,” he said. “To me, what was interesting about the character was that he prevailed, that he had courage, that he had wit, that he had intelligence, that he was frightened and that he still managed to survive. That I can do.”

Ford told TV host Ellen DeGeneres in February that production on a new film would begin this year. “It’s going to be fun. I am excited,” he said on the show. “They’re great fun to make.”

The actor, who is also famous for his portrayal of Han Solo in the Star Wars film series, is 78.

“Yeah, we are working on the script,” producer Frank Marshall told Den of Geek earlier this week. “There will only be one Indiana Jones, and that’s Harrison Ford.”
