British man pleads guilty in failed attempt to kill Trump

A British man who attempted to kill Republican nominee Donald Trump at a Las Vegas campaign rally in June pleaded guilty Tuesday on two charges related to the incident.

“I tried to take a gun from a policeman to shoot someone with, and I’m pleading guilty,” Michael Steven Sandford told the judge about his pleas to being an illegal alien in possession of a firearm and disrupting an official function.

The 20-year-old had been in the U.S. illegally after overstaying his visa and attempted to shoot Trump, but has not given a reason for the failed attack.

Sandford drove to the rally from California, stopping at a Las Vegas gun range for shooting practice before attending the rally at Treasure Island Casino. At the rally, Sandford had walked up to a Las Vegas police officer and said he wanted to get Trump’s autograph. Sandford then grabbed the officer’s gun, but was immediately subdued by the officer. No shots were fired.

He faces 18 to 27 months in prison for the two offenses and will not be able to appeal a conviction. His trial is set to start Oct. 3 and sentencing Dec. 13.
