Sen. Ron Johnson on Sunday played down a new poll showing 60 percent of those asked disapprove of the job President Trump is doing, and said the GOP only needs to play up the roaring economy to do well in the November midterm elections.
“If I believed in polls, I wouldn’t have even run in 2016,” he said on ABC News’ “This Week” on Sunday.
“So I’m not a big believer in the polls,” he added. “There’s only one poll that counts, it’s on Election Day.”
“For over the next two months, Republicans just have to point out the success, and it’s been an astonishing success: 4.1 percent growth in just the last quarter,” Johnson said.
Trump’s high disapproval rating was revealed in a new ABC poll that also said 49 percent of those asked think Congress should start impeachment proceedings against Trump.
Trump has been under constant pressure from Democrats, who say he colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. Several of his former campaign aides have been indicted through charges brought by special counsel Robert Mueller.
