Long courtship for Courtin – set to play An Die Musik Live

Christina Courtin is carving her own niche.

A classically trained musician since the age of 3, Courtin, 25, a native of New York and graduate of Juilliard, has added writer, arranger and singer to her resume. Her music is a genre lover’s dream — a delightful mix of blues, soul and rock, with elements of jazz and classical.

Courtin makes her Baltimore debut at An die Musik Live on Wednesday.

Your debut album is being released in January — how does it feel to finally have your work accomplished?

It’s a great thing at any age. I’m very happy that it’s coming out finally, if all goes according to plan. It’s very raw and very fresh — like a breath of fresh air. The playing and the musicians are just top-notch.

How do you feel about your opening gig for singer Suzanne Vega?

I’ve been an up-and-coming musician for 25 years [laughs]. It’s kinda rough to open for someone, because no one is really there for you. I’ve had some good experiences, but it’s tough.

Were you a fan of Vega’s music growing up?

It’s funny, that one tune, “Tom’s Diner,” my little brother and I had this joke about it, and we would make up our own words to the song. I was a little kid when that came out, so I feel like I didn’t even really know it was her. But she’s great, I really dig her.
