WATCH: Man uses gas generator in electric vehicle to drive 1,800 miles

A man took his electric vehicle on a road trip and had an unconventional solution for driving 1,800 miles without stopping for a charge.

Matt Mikka explained he used a 400-cc gas generator in the back of his Tesla Model S.

“I really like my Tesla but what I don’t like is stopping to charge, especially on a road trip,” Mikka said. “I don’t even like stopping to fill up my gas-powered car, and that’s way faster than charging.”

In a video posted to his YouTube channel, Warped Perception, Mikka explained that he placed the generator where the Tesla’s rear window is.

While Mikka made the 1,800-mile trip without plugging in at an electric vehicle charging station, he had to stop to allow the Tesla to charge on the side of the road. Mikka also said he had to drive at slower speeds in order to have enough energy to keep the Tesla charged. That, however, was the cause for him being pulled over.

“I pulled you over because you were going slower than the normal rate of traffic,” a police officer is heard telling Mikka.

Mikka explained to the officer: “If I go faster, I won’t make it. I can speed it up a little bit, and then I got to pull over and wait like 15 minutes, and then I can go and speed it up again. It’s a thing like time versus distance.”

Along his road trip, Mikka stopped to collect some rocks off Lake Michigan, and the police were called again to complain about the generator’s noise.

“This was a cool build, but to me, it was basically useless,” Mikka said. “It just didn’t have enough energy. I still had to stop and let the car charge itself up, which did not make me happy.”

Mikka estimated that when driving 50 mph, the gas generator gave him 225 watts per mile and 24 miles per gallon. Yet when driving 80 mph, he guessed he got 389 watts per mile and 14 miles per gallon.
