Officials with the British bank that has been accused of doing $250 billion in business with banks in Iran gave more than $80,000 to American political figures in recent years.
People identifying themselves as employees of Standard Chartered bank have given $30,000 to the Democratic National Committee and another $27,150 to President Barack Obama‘s campaign in the last three election cycles, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics.
They’ve also given $7,300 to U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin, R-Arkansas, $3,200 to the Republican National Committee and $3,000 to Republican presidential nominee-in-waiting Mitt Romney.
Standard Chartered could have its license revoked by New York state amid the accusations that it did business with Iran and then doctored records to cover it up, according to national press reports.
While the major recipients of Standard Chartered‘s cash may skew Democratic, the bank is merely the latest in a long list of banks behaving badly — banks that write campaign checks to both parties. Just a few weeks ago, the bank on the hot seat was Barclays, the British concern at the center of the “LIBOR” scandal, whose bankers are significant donors to Romney.
