Four friends charged in hunting accident

Four Prince George’s County men were charged with illegal hunting after a fifth friend was shot while trying to flush deer out from a heavily wooded area.

At about 2 p.m. Saturday, Maryland Natural Resources Police responded to a report of a hunting accident off Indian Head Highway and Oxon Hill Road on land owned by the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

The investigation revealed that Roy A. Contee, 57, of Upper Marlboro, shot at and missed a deer and struck another member of his hunting party, said Sgt. Art Windemuth. Ricky L. Johnson, 59, was struck in the abdomen and knee, and taken to a Prince George’s County hospital. Police did not know his condition.

Contee was charged with negligent hunting, hunting without written permission from the landowners and hunting with buckshot.

Bryan Creek, 53, of Capitol Heights, was charged with hunting without a license, illegal use of a buckshot, hunting without written permission , hunting without a hunting safety certificate and failure to carry a second form of identification while hunting.

James E. Creek, 66, Capitol Heights, was charged with failure to wear florescent orange while hunting, illegal use of buckshot, hunting without written permission and failure to complete field tag.

Marcus R. Johnson, 56, of Fort Washington, was charged with hunting without permission and illegal use of buckshot to hunt deer.

The investigation is ongoing, Windemuth said.
