Howard Stern: Trump’s border wall a campaign promise for ‘morons’

Radio shock jock Howard Stern said Wednesday President Trump’s southern border wall was a 2016 campaign promise aimed at “morons.”

“The wall’s a problem because it’s a waste of money, even Donald knows that,” Stern said on his SiriusXM radio program. “You gotta know Donald a bit to understand what’s going on here. The wall’s a simplistic answer to our problems with immigration. It’s something that, you know, morons can get behind because they’re like, ‘Oh yeah, if you build a wall no one can get over it.’ But it’s not that simple.”

“Even Donald’s not into this wall. It’s just he’s embarrassed because he can’t get it, and Rush Limbaugh shamed him,” Stern told his listeners, referring to the conservative radio commentator.

Stern’s comments come amid a partial federal government shutdown, which has lasted 19 days as of Wednesday. Negotiations over reopening the government have reached a stalemate, as Trump asks for more than $5 billion for impediments along the U.S.-Mexico border, a demand congressional Democrats have refused to meet.

Stern and Trump share a long history. Many of the interviews Trump gave Stern over the years resurfaced when the former real estate mogul and reality TV star began jostling for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination.

Stern on Wednesday said “more security” in general was needed to stem illegal immigration.

“Right now we don’t even have air traffic controllers being paid,” Stern said. “Talk about a lack of security. If I’m a terrorist, I’m coming in now. I bet you they’re flooding in while this government shutdown is going on.”
