Oyster Tasting at Black Jack Saturday
How does that old rule about eating oysters go? They should only be enjoyed in months that contain the letter ‘r’?
Well, not if you ask Jeff Black.
“We’re trying to show people you can enjoy oysters in the summertime,” said Black, owner of Black Jack, Pearl Dive Oyster Palace and a number of other local restaurants.
On Saturday, Black Jack is hosting an oyster tasting, featuring selections from the Rappahannock Oyster Company and the Broadwater Oyster Company. The event will include sparkling wine, beer, heavy hors d’oeuvres and all-you-can eat oysters.
Oyster shells collected at the event will be recycled and put back into the Chesapeake Bay and area oyster farmers will be on hand to discuss the importance of supporting the local oyster industry.
“When you look at the bay, you’ve got to look at the whole component of it,” Black said.
Black said that shells put back into the bay provide a bed for future oysters to reproduce. So, in some way, the more oysters eaten on Saturday, the better for future generations.
“To get more of them, you have to eat more of them,” Black said.
