Trump touts Republican gains in midterm polling

President Trump highlighted a poll from John MacLaughlin that shows the GOP up in the latest generic congressional ballot.

“Big gain over last 4 weeks,” Trump tweeted Sunday. “I guess people are loving the big Tax Cuts given them by Republicans, the Cuts the Dems want to take away. We need more Republicans!”

Trump was likely referring to a poll earlier this month from the pollster McLaughlin & Associates that found Democrats ahead on a generic ballot for U.S. Congress by 45 percent compared to 42 percent.

The generic ballot difference has held steady though in prior polls. For instance, in the last poll on Jan. 11, the results showed 45 percent favor Democrats and 42 percent Republicans.
