NY biologists see upswing in bear problems

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. (AP) — A state Department of Environmental Conservation biologist says calls about problem bears have gone up this month.

Biologist Ed Reed tells the Adirondack Daily Enterprise (http://bit.ly/P8iw4s ) that a lot of calls started coming in right before the Fourth of July. Most of the calls are about bears getting into garbage cans and bird feeders. Bears have also been raiding campers’ food supplies in the Adirondack High Peaks Wilderness Area.

In Wilmington, wildlife biologists trapped and relocated a bear that was breaking into a barn and chicken coop last week.

Reed says the problem is likely that the vegetation bears normally eat has withered for lack of rain.
