The San Diego Zoo Safari Park celebrated the arrival of a male giraffe calf on Monday but later announced he died two days later.
The wildlife conservation park’s Facebook page reported the giraffe’s health had begun deteriorating.
“Following the birth, wildlife care specialists noticed that the calf’s condition began to deteriorate, including difficulty standing and not nursing,” the Safari Park’s Facebook post stated.
The calf was taken to the Safari Park Harter Veterinary Medical Center, where around-the-clock care was provided.
“Unfortunately, despite all [veterinarian care team] efforts, his condition continued to worsen, and the team made the compassionate decision to euthanize the calf,” the post added.
The giraffe was born to first-time mother, Zindzi. She and the rest of the herd are now being monitored for “unusual behavior” in the wake of the calf’s death.
