Former Texas congressman Steve Stockman was arrested for violations of federal election law Thursday and could face time in federal prison if convicted.
According to KPRC in Houston, the Republican is accused of setting up a non-profit called Life Without Limits in Las Vegas and then funneling a large donation to that organization back to himself through campaign contributions from the organization’s employees.
According to the report, a $350,000 donation from one individual was made to Life Without Limits in 2011. Employees at the charity then donated that money to Stockman.
The report stated Stockman was brought in the courtroom in handcuffs and was arraigned on charges he conspired with two former employees to perpetuate the scheme.
Stockman served in Congress from 1995 to 1997 and again from 2011 to 2013. He resigned from Congress to run against Texas Sen. John Cornyn in 2014, but was defeated.
