Stern goes red to stand apart

The Redhead Cos., an advertising and communications agency headquartered in Ellicott City, is not a new agency ? in fact, it?s more than 14 years old.

But until last July, it was known simply as The Stern Agency, headed by longtime industry veteran Ed Stern.

And in an industry where name recognition is key, Stern, the agency?s president, said a variety of factors finally led him to change the name of the company he founded.

The first factor was logistics. Stern said that until last July, there were two companies acting on behalf of the agency?s clients: Stern Agency and Redhead, an interactive company that has been a part of the agency since 2000.

“We wanted to brand both under one company,” Stern said.

Stern, a natural redhead himself, said the company?s new name is based on the fact that redheads generally stand out from the crowd.

“We believe that Redhead is about embracing what is unique about yourself and standing out,” said Stern.

“For our clients, we believe our job is to help them stand out. We want clients who think like redheads ? who are not afraid to be different.”

Stern added that aside from the name change, the company has grown significantly in the past few years. It employs 20 people and its major clients include Struever Bros. Eccles and Rouse, the International Spy Museum and College Savings Plans of Maryland.

“The largest we had been was 15 people, and that was prior to the rough times in the early 2000s,” said Stern.
