Plastic now welcome at Petworth’s market

What would an outdoor market be without stopping at the nearest ATM and paying those exorbitant bank fees? A lot nicer, we think.

And thanks to a May fundraiser, D.C.’s Petworth Community Market is joining the ranks of the 21st Century and now accepting credit and debit cards.

Not only are they making forgetful customers happy by not requiring cash but they’ll also likely start winning over the cheap-o shoppers who didn’t want to pay the ATM fees so they skipped the market if they didn’t have the funds in their wallets. The market board’s EBT machine also accepts SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, formerly known as food stamps). And those who spend $10 or more with SNAP get and additional $5.

The May fundraiser was held at Domku Cafe on Upshur Street, which is hosting on Thursday evening the Faces of Petworth Photo Exhibit Opening by Michael Wilkinson Photography. Print sales will benefit the Petworth Community Market.

The market runs Fridays, 4 to 8 p.m., through Sept. 30, along 9th Street at the intersection of Georgia Avenue and Upshur Street Northwest.
