A Glen Burnie man has been sentenced to 10 years and one month in prison for forcing a 12-year-old girl from the District to work as a prostitute.
Prosecutors said 43-year-old Derwin Smith was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Baltimore. He pleaded guilty in March to transporting a minor across state lines to engage in prostitution.
Court records say members of the Maryland Human Trafficking Task Force in June recovered from an Anne Arundel County motel room a 12-year-old girl who had been reported missing. Investigators learned that the room was registered to Smith, and the girl identified him as the person who picked her up on a D.C. street, paid for sexual services in his car and recruited her to work as a prostitute.
Smith drove the girl to Atlantic City, N.J., where men paid to have sex with her. The girl gave Smith all of the money, court records say.
