?Armed career criminal? gets 17 years

A Baltimore man federal prosecutors call an “armed career criminal” was sentenced to 17 years in prison Wednesday for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake sentenced Naim Dawson, 31, of Baltimore, to the term of imprisonment plus a period of three years of supervised release.

Dawson had three previous convictions for crimes of violence or drug-trafficking crimes, prosecutors said.

On Jan. 18, 2005, Drug Enforcement Administration agents stopped Dawson after he exited a store in Baltimore City carrying a package which the agents believed contained drug paraphernalia, prosecutors said.

The agents searched Dawson?s vehicle, retrieved the package and recovered 250 empty vials and vial tops used for packagingcocaine and crack cocaine for street sales, according to the U.S. Attorney?s Office.

Agents also searched Dawson?s apartment and recovered a loaded Glock, Model 26, 9mm Luger caliber pistol, two bags containing 67 grams of crack cocaine, a sifter and other paraphernalia used to prepare and package crack cocaine, prosecutors said.
