The Kremlin-backed news outlet RT lost its press credentials required for its reporters to roam the halls of Congress.
The Associated Press reported Wednesday that RT had its credentials revoked after the outlet registered as a foreign agent, in compliance with a new Justice Department ruling on the organization.
A committee of journalists oversees the credentialing process. C-SPAN Capitol Hill producer Craig Caplan, who chairs the committee, informed RT of its decision.
The credentialing rules “state clearly that news credentials may not be issued to any applicant employed by ‘any foreign government or representative thereof,'” Caplan said in a letter to RT, according to the report.
The Justice Department told RT to register as a foreign agent in October, a rule that effectively means the government recognizes the outlet to be a propaganda tool for Russia.
