Mark McCloskey, the lawyer who aimed a gun at BLM protesters, loses GOP Senate primary

Mark McCloskey, who drew national attention in 2020 when he aimed a firearm at Black Lives Matter protesters, has lost the Republican primary in the Missouri Senate race.

The lawyer-turned-Senate primary candidate had posted a social media video on Tuesday claiming he was the only “genuine MAGA” candidate in the race and joking about how there were three candidates named Eric who were all endorsed by former President Donald Trump. However, McCloskey only gained 3% of the vote in the primary contest, placing fifth in a field of 21 candidates, according to NPR.

“Well, my name is Mark McCloskey, and I can tell you one thing: There’s one genuine MAGA, ‘America First,’ strong border, law and order, real American patriot in this race, and that’s me,” McCloskey said in his video.

As of Wednesday morning, McCloskey has not addressed his loss on social media.

McCloskey and his wife became known after the couple brandished firearms at Black Lives Matter protesters outside their home in St. Louis in the wake of the death of George Floyd. The couple was pardoned in August 2021 by Missouri Gov. Mike Parson after they pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges over the incident.

The Missouri Supreme Court ruled to suspend the McCloskeys’ law licenses in February but opted to delay the suspension and instead put them on probation for a year. The Supreme Court denied an appeal by the couple over the ruling in June 2022.
