Hank Steinbrenner, one of the owners of the New York Yankees, died Tuesday at age 63 from health complications.
The son of legendary New York businessman and former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner also served as the franchise’s co-chairman before his death Tuesday, which was unrelated to the coronavirus pandemic, according to the New York Post.
“Hank was a genuine and gentle spirit who treasured the deep relationship he formed with those closest to him,” the Steinbrenner family said in a statement released by the organization. “He was introduced to the Yankees organization at a very young age, and his love for sports and competition continued to burn brightly throughout his career.”
“More than anything, he set an example for all of us in how comfortably he lived enjoying his personal passions and pursuits. We are profoundly saddened to have lost him and will carry his memory with us always.”
In the late 2000s, as George Steinbrenner’s health deteriorated, Hank Steinbrenner, the eldest of four, started overseeing the team more directly.
More recently, the eldest child was the team’s general partner and co-chairman while his brother, Hal, is the Yankees’ managing general partner and co-chairman. His two sisters, Jennifer Steinbrenner Swindal and Jessica Steinbrenner, are general partners and vice chairwomen.
