PHILADELPHIA — Incoming Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Donna Brazile promised to govern the Democratic Party in a manner that would make its members proud.
In the aftermath of WikiLeaks publishing internal Democratic National Committee emails online, Brazile assumed the top role and apologized for the DNC’s actions. On Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention, she detailed the path forward for her party.
“As your incoming chair of the Democratic National Committee, I promise you my friends, I commit to all Americans that we will have party that you can be proud of,” Brazile said. “We will elect Democrats up and down the ballot and we will celebrate together the inauguration of President Hillary Clinton in January 2017.”
Brazile also touted Clinton’s commitment to every child’s equality of opportunity as a reason to vote for the Democratic nominee.
“At her core, rooting her to this earth, is the belief that every child, black or white, native-born, immigrant, or undocumented, they deserve they have the opportunity to live up to their God-given potential,” Brazile said. “My friends, as a child, when I sat in the back of the bus I was told time and time again that God’s potential did not exist in people like me. I spent my life fighting to change that and from the first day I met Hillary Clinton I’ve known that she is someone who cares just as much and will fight just as hard for children everywhere.”
Brazile’s fiery pitch is one she’s made throughout the week including to women’s groups and the Democratic black caucus. Her speech came after several supporters of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders exited the convention and occupied a media tent outside the convention hall. Whether Brazile can unite the warring factions of the Democrats remains to be seen.
