The Fleshtones press on after all these years

At last, official confirmation.

It was, indeed, the discovery of some discarded musical instruments in the basement of their Brooklyn home that led Keith Streng, Jan-Marek Pakulski and neighbor Peter Zaremba to try them out, learn to play and form the 1970s garage band pioneers The Fleshtones.

But what?s even more surprising is that The Fleshtones are the only mid-1970s punk band that has never broken up and never taken a break, and they are still cranking out CDs.

“We just find it really satisfying,” Zaremba said. “lt?s not like what we do is strictly about us. It is about the audience, as well.”

Screaming, destroying equipment and basically letting all aggression out on stage are still hallmarks of the band that made its reputation as a regular at New York clubs CBGBs and Max?s Kansas City.

“It?s still a bit of a high,,” Zaremba said. “We end every performance coming away feeling really good, almost purified.”
