Serena and Venus Williams won’t be the only big names to step foot in Kastles Stadium this summer. Earlier this week, Washington Kastles owner Mark Ein announced that the professional tennis team would host its first Kastles Charity Classic, allowing pols, media members and other local athletes to show off their tennis chops.
“Rather than having this be one of those Washington sporting events where it’s Republicans versus Democrats, Congress versus the administration, or media against politicians, we’re going to mix it all up and put everyone on the same two benches to play each other for an hour and a half,” Ein told Yeas & Nays, noting how many good tennis players lived in Washington. For those who aren’t so great, Ein has a plan for that too. “One of the things about team tennis is you’re allowed to substitute players,” Ein said. “So if someone’s really struggling, they’re going to get the hook and we’ll put one of the pros in.”
So far the lineup consists of ABC News’ Jonathan Karl, Fox News’ Bret Baier, D.C. United’s Ben Olsen, D.C. Council members Jack Evans and Yvette Alexander, and former Sen. John Breaux, R-La., with more to come. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, with proceeds benefiting the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, Share our Strength and the D.C. Public Education Fund.
