D.C. Council members receive the second-highest pay among lawmakers in the nation’s biggest cities and also spend more on their staffs than any other city council, a report released Wednesday by the Pew Charitable Trust said.
The 12 members of the D.C. Council earn $125,000 a year and the council chairman earns $190,000 annually. Only city lawmakers in Los Angeles get paid more than those in the District. In L.A. they earn nearly $179,000 each year. That puts D.C. ahead of much larger cities like New York, Chicago and Dallas, which were also surveyed by Pew.
Unlike the other cities, the District fulfills the functions of state, county and city governments.
