George Washington University has grown considerably in the past 20 years. The 43-acre campus sits four blocks from the White House and is the largest institution of higher education in the nation’s capital and the city’s largest private employer.
To support an undergraduate student body of 10,000, the George Washington University has bought property around the Foggy Bottom neighborhood. It has opened five residence halls housing 2,500 students since 1997 with plans to build another 474-bed facility.
Since outgoing president Stephen Joel Trachtenberg arrived in 1988, endowments have grown from $200 million to more than $1 billion. Trachtenberg also created five new schools: public health, professional studies, political management, and media and public affairs. He’s also established Northern Virginia and Mount Vernon campuses.
Applications for undergraduate admission have risen from 6,000 to more than 20,000 per year.
