A father is cooperating with police after they say he and bystanders in Philadelphia beat a suspected carjacker to death when he took off in the vehicle with the man’s children inside.
The incident occurred on Thursday, about 9:50 p.m. Police say a 54-year-old male stole a vehicle with three children inside while the mother and father were inside a store. The parents ran after the car and were able to catch up to it after he hit traffic a few blocks away.
The father pulled the man out of the car. The suspect fought him off and ran away, but was stopped by a large crowd who then joined in attacking him. After police and medics arrived, the suspect was unconscious and with severe injuries to the head and face, according to NBC Philadelphia.
The man was transported to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m.
The investigation is active and ongoing with the homicide division, but no arrests have been made yet. The district attorney’s office is working to determine if the father will be charged.
