State Department issues warning after gunfire at Philippines resort

“#Manila #Philippines—reports of explosions/gunfire at Resorts World Manila, near the Manila Intl Airport. Avoid area & monitor local news,” the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs tweeted.

The resort announced on its Twitter it was on lockdown.

“Resorts World Manila is currently on lockdown following reports of gunfire from unidentified gunmen. The company is working closely with the Philippine National Police to ensure that all guests and employees are safe. We ask for your prayers during these difficult times,” the resort said in a series of tweets.

Police, fire trucks and SWAT teams responded to the resort complex, which features a casino, mall, cinema and theater, according to reports. Police said there were serious injuries.

Pasay City police said it isn’t yet clear what caused the incident, according to ABC News.

SITE Intel Group reported an operative for the Islamic State said the group was responsible for the attack.

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said on Twitter that President Trump is “aware of the situation in Manila and being provided updates by his national security team,” and Trump addressed the incident Thursday afternoon in a White House speech.

“It’s really very sad as to what’s going on throughout the show with terror,” the president said. “Our thoughts and our prayers are with all of those affected.”
