WATCH: Chip Roy confirms he thanked Pence for Jan. 6 courage

Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) confirmed reports that he thanked former Vice President Mike Pence for his courage on Jan. 6 and for doing “as he is constitutionally required to do.”

During a Friday speech at Young America’s Foundation’s National Conservative Student Conference, Roy said, “I have thanked Vice President Pence for being there on the floor and counting the electors as he is constitutionally required to do,” in response to a question from the son of Marc Short, Pence’s former chief of staff.

“I will stand up and say that all day long,” he added.

“I believed we should count the electors. I believe that was important,” Roy said, noting that some had “different” views.

Roy’s office did not offer further comment when contacted by the Washington Examiner.

He also told students that he supports capital punishment for drug dealers.

“Yes, of course,” Roy responded to the issue of allowing the death penalty for those convicted of dealing drugs.

“But the question is who and in what context,” he continued. “If the federal government is involved because we’ve got a drug kingpin … and they’re causing the deaths of, you know, scores, dozens, hundreds, thousands of Americans, yeah, of course, I support the death penalty for that.”
