Sen. Ted Cruz’s beard appears to be growing on people.
The Texas Republican set Twitter alight in November when he returned to Capitol Hill after fending off a Senate seat challenge from Democratic darling Rep. Beto O’Rourke with salt and pepper-colored scruff on his usually clean-shaven face.
While social media pundits weren’t kind to Cruz’s stubble early on, the 2016 Republican presidential candidate’s efforts on Wednesday earned a ringing endorsement from Esquire magazine.
“I know Beto O’Rourke gave him a run for his money in the midterms, but Cruz’s greatest opponent has always been his own face,” Ben Boskovich, the publication’s managing editor, wrote. “The pursed lips, the dead eyes, a chin that constantly looks like it was just rid of melted popsicle juice. That’s all changed now, because there are whiskers covering half of it.”
Boskovich’s post comes on the heels of similar praise from Slate magazine writer Christina Cauterucci, CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski, and model Chrissy Teigen.

A representative for Cruz did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner‘s request for comment concerning the shift in public opinion.
