12-year-old driving car killed in Maryland crash

Police in Maryland are investigating a car crash that left a 12-year-old driver dead early Sunday morning.

Josseline Molina-Rivas was driving at 2:08 a.m. when her vehicle, a 2017 Toyota Corolla, left the roadway for an unknown reason and struck a tree, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene, and a 36-year-old male passenger, Mario Arturo-Artiga, was hospitalized and remains in serious condition, Howard County police said Monday.

“Josseline was a wonderful daughter and niece who touched the lives of those around her,” according to a GoFundMe page set up by Molina-Rivas’s family to pay for funeral expenses. “She leaves behind her mother and 2 uncles.”

Police have tracked down the registered owner of the vehicle and determined that both the driver and passenger were unrelated and lived in the same apartment in Columbia, Maryland, with numerous family members and residents, according to the police. It is unclear why she was driving the vehicle or why the two were out at 2 a.m., the statement reads.

Police are also investigating if either Molina-Rivas or Arturo-Artiga was under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
