Progressive group New York Working Families Party endorsed actress Cynthia Nixon in the New York gubernatorial primary, dealing a blow to current Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Cuomo urged unions to leave the Working Families Party a day before the vote. The Service Employees International Union Local 32BJ, and Communications Workers of America District 1, left the party at Cuomo’s request.
“We are ready to go all-out to elect @CynthiaNixon and build a New York for the many, not just the few,” the Working Families Party said in a tweet after the vote on Saturday.
Now I am so incredibly excited to have earned the endorsement from @NYWFP, the heart & soul of communities across the state.
Together, we will fight to end the racial, economic, and educational inequality that deprive so many working and middle class New Yorkers of opportunity. pic.twitter.com/3G4gYMqX3D
