The United States Embassy to the Vatican announced it is flying a gay pride flag that will remain up for the month of June to support the gay community.
“The U.S. Embassy to the Holy See celebrates #PrideMonth with the Pride flag on display during the month of June,” the Twitter announcement read. “The United States respects the dignity and equality of LGBTQI+ people. LGBTQI+ rights are human rights.”

The move comes a year after Pope Francis voiced support for same-sex civil unions despite Catholic teachings that homosexual acts are immoral and that marriage is between only a man and a woman.
Earlier this year, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that U.S. embassies across the world could fly the pride flag during pride season on the same flagpole as the American flag.

“Pride is both a jubilant communal celebration of visibility and a personal celebration of self-worth and dignity,” President Joe Biden, who identifies as Catholic, said Tuesday in a proclamation commemorating June as Pride Month.
“During LGBTQ+ Pride Month, we recognize the resilience and determination of the many individuals who are fighting to live freely and authentically,” Biden said. “In doing so, they are opening hearts and minds, and laying the foundation for a more just and equitable America. This Pride Month, we affirm our obligation to uphold the dignity of all people, and dedicate ourselves to protecting the most vulnerable among us.”
The U.S. Embassy to the Vatican did not immediately respond to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
