The interim director of the D.C.’s juvenile justice agency has remained in his position despite saying he was resigning as of last Friday, Mayor-elect Vince Gray confirmed to The Washington Examiner.
Gray said he plans on meeting with Robert Hildum later in the day Tuesday if time permits following what’s expected to be a long day. The D.C. Council, which Gray still leads as chairman, is considering a substantial slate of bills.
“I’m not sure how long he will be staying on,” Gray said of Hildum. “We do need leadership there now.”
The director of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services must sign off on plans that determine a juvenile offender’s rehabilitation to go forward. Without a director, the agency would shut down.
Hildum had submitted his resignation last Wednesday with the idea that he would leave two days later and return to his old job as head of the attorney general’s public safety division.
But law enforcement sources told The Examiner that Gray’s transition team reached out to Hildum on Friday and asked him to remain in place to help with the transition, if not for longer. Attorney General Peter Nickles had said Hildum was leaving because he didn’t feel wanted by the Gray administration.
It’s not clear, however, what actually got Hildum to stay on.
