Convicted robber gets 25 years

The surviving suspect in last winter?s attempted robbery of a Perry Hall grocery store that ended with the shooting of a Baltimore County police officer was sentenced to 25 years in prison Monday.

Baltimore County Circuit Judge Dana Levitz sentenced Vernon Brown, 35, who pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery and handgun charges.

Brown held up a Super Fresh on Belair Road on Dec. 14, 2006, with his cousin Learnold Jones, 33, according to court records.

According to the documents, Brown said he had second thoughts and decided to leave. Police caught him outside; Jones ran and hid in a nearby shed, officials said.

After gunfire from the shed struck Officer David Garner, a tactical officer fired into the shed, apparently killing Jones, court records state.

Garner was treated at a hospital and released.
