‘Used as political pinatas’: Activists vow to block immigrant buses

Peeved by the recent drop-off of immigrants near the home of Vice President Kamala Harris early Thursday morning, activists vowed to venture down to Texas to block future buses.

United Latin American Citizens National President Domingo Garcia lampooned Texas Gov. Greg Abbott for using immigrants as “political pinatas” and then dumping them “like human garbage” outside of Harris’s home and pledged to take the fight to Texas.

“[Abbott] was using babies — families as political pinatas for a political stunt by bringing these buses at 6 o’clock in the morning. Many of these refugees, by the way, have health issues,” Garcia lamented at a press conference after the drop-off. “Many with just a trash bag of their personal belongings and they were just literally dumped like human garbage in front of the vice president’s house.”

As part of his group’s efforts to push back against the immigrant busing gambit, Garcia unveiled the “Stop-the-Buses Task Force.” He said that after his group travels to Martha’s Vineyard on Friday, it will head to Eagle Pass, Texas, which along with Del Rio was one of the locations in Texas from which immigrants were gathered and put on buses.

Garcia plans to lead a group of activists that will engage in civil disobedience in a bid to block future buses of immigrants from leaving Eagle Pass. When pressed about how he could stop buses, Garcia said his colleagues may put “people in front of the buses” to stop the vehicles in their tracks. He cited a successful campaign to stop a bus in McAllen, Texas, under the Trump administration as an example.

On Thursday morning, two busloads totaling about 101 immigrants were dropped off near the Naval Observatory before local volunteers moved them to another location to feed them and direct them to their final destinations. Abbott tied the drop-off to Harris who twice declared during a recent interview that the southern border is “secure.”

Garcia lambasted the “inhumane” treatment and also ripped into Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who sent two planeloads of immigrants to Martha’s Vineyard on Wednesday. Garcia pledged that his group would travel to the Massachusetts island to address the immigrant situation there.

“Shame on you, Gov. Abbott. Shame on you, Gov. DeSantis. … These political stunts have no role in American politics,” Garcia continued. “Jesus would be very ashamed of these two governors if he saw how they were treating refugees because Jesus and his family were these ones.”

Since the start of the busing endeavor, which has been dubbed Operation Lone Star, Texas has bused over 10,000 immigrants to places such as Washington, D.C., New York City, and Chicago in a jab at Democrats for the influx of immigrants pouring into their state, according to the governor’s office.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser blasted the move as “a politically motivated stunt,” and the White House has similarly zinged Abbott for having a “track record of causing chaos and confusion at the border.”
