Former Vice President Dick Cheney ripped into former President Donald Trump as a “threat to our republic” in a scathing ad supporting his daughter Rep. Liz Cheney in her uphill Aug. 16 Wyoming Republican primary battle.
Dick Cheney lambasted Trump as a coward who lied to the people after voters rejected him during the 2020 election, chiding that “deep down,” Trump and the GOP know he was defeated. He then hailed his daughter’s fearlessness in leading the effort to stop Trump from returning to the White House.

“In our nation’s 246-year history, there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our republic than Donald Trump,” Dick Cheney declared in the ad.
“He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to stay in power after voters rejected him. He is a coward. A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters. He lost his election, and he lost big.”

Since Liz Cheney began publicly criticizing Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 election and joined the House Jan. 6 committee, her approval has nosedived among Wyoming voters. She is facing a tough primary challenge from Trump-backed attorney Harriet Hageman.
Dick Cheney held Wyoming’s lone House seat from 1979-89 before being defense secretary and then vice president under President George W. Bush.
Polls have consistently shown Liz Cheney trailing, with one in July showing Hageman eclipsing her by 22 percentage points. Still, Dick Cheney voiced optimism that his daughter will prevail in her battle against Trump.
“Lynne and I are so proud of Liz for standing up for the truth — doing what’s right. Honoring her oath to the Constitution. So many in our party are too scared to do so,” Dick Cheney continued. “Liz is fearless, she never backs down from a fight. There is nothing more important she will ever do than lead the effort to make sure Donald Trump is never again near the Oval Office, and she will succeed.”
The Cheneys had once enjoyed positions of prominence in Republican circles. Dick Cheney was vice president for eight years, and his daughter was the chairwoman of the House Republican Conference until she faced a mutiny last year after bucking the party with her criticisms of Trump for the Capitol riot.

Liz Cheney recently received support from Yellowstone star Kevin Costner. In June, reports surfaced that her campaign was sending mailers with instructions for Democratic voters on how to switch parties.
The Wyoming Republican House primary will be a significant test of whether one of Trump’s most prominent critics in the House can survive.
