A 21-year-old Riverdale man remained hospitalized late Tuesday after his vehicle slammed into a department store on the D.C./Maryland border.
Montgomery County police were seeking charges against Mitchell Edward Coleman following a fiery crash that closed down the Hecht’s at 5400 Wisconsin Ave. in Chevy Chase.
Police said Coleman was speeding along Military Road in D.C. at about 1 a.m. Tuesday when he lost control of his 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. The car hit a median strip at the intersection of Military Road and Western Avenue, bounded along the sidewalk, flipped into the air and crashed into the side of Hecht’s. It then burst into flames.
Coleman allegedly jumped out of the burning car and ran to a Metrobus on Wisconsin Avenue. D.C. police on the scene kept Coleman from fleeing.
The crash shut down Hecht’s for the day.
