UK infectious disease expert advises people wear masks with three layers

An infectious disease expert for the United Kingdom said residents should “ideally” wear face masks with three layers to help protect against the coronavirus.

“What we recommend is at least two layers and ideally three layers in a mask. That is really important to reduce the virus transmission both from you to others and others to you,” Susan Hopkins of Public Health England said, the Times reported.

The U.K. made wearing face masks while shopping or in other public settings mandatory in July.

“We have got a face masks and face coverings advisory group who meet on a regular basis and look at new and emerging evidence. The U.S. has looked at some of that evidence as well,” Hopkins continued.

FAUCI SAYS ‘THERE’S NO DATA THAT INDICATES’ DOUBLE MASKS WORK AFTER SAYING OTHERWISE LAST WEEK

“We are in an ongoing discussion about what to do next. But we think one mask that has more than two layers in it is currently effective for the vast majority of the population.”

Stateside, Dr. Anthony Fauci said that double masking “makes common sense.”

“Because, I mean, this is a physical covering to prevent droplets and virus to get in,” Fauci told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie in January. “So, if you have a physical covering with one layer, you put another layer on — it just makes common sense that it likely would be more effective, and that’s the reason why you see people either double-masking or doing a version of an N95.”

The following week, however, Fauci said, “There’s no data that indicates that that is going to make a difference.” The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ultimately recommended that people double mask in early February.

President Biden has been seen on multiple occasions wearing double masks, including before Inauguration Day.
