Police officer shot responding to ambush setup attack

A Tennessee police officer was shot Tuesday evening responding to a call that authorities are calling an ambush attack.

Nashville police officer Brian Sherman was shot in the upper arm responding to a home police say was occupied by a gunman who intentionally lured officers there before opening fire and eventually committing suicide, according to Fox News.

The “setup call” to 911 was placed shortly after 6 p.m. Tuesday and claimed that a woman had been shot during a family dispute. But when officers showed up, they were fired upon.

“Almost immediately, shots were fired at the officers,” police spokesman Don Aaron said. “This was a ruse to get the police to the house.”

Officers immediately backed away and rendered aid to Sherman before the gunman, identified as 22-year-old Salman Mohamed, walked outside and shot himself in the head while officers tried to negotiate with him.

Police say no shots were fired by officers at Mohamed.

Sherman, a two-year veteran of the force, was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive.

The attack on law enforcement comes as anti-police rhetoric stemming from several high-profile police shootings has placed a target on police officers across the country, which experts say is contributing to the rising number of line-of-duty deaths so far this year.
