Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., spoke against Trump’s decision to ban transgender people from serving “in any capacity” in the U.S. military.
“Mr. Trump, you are on the wrong side of history. Discrimination has no place in our military or society. We must stand with trans people,” Sanders tweeted alongside a photo of a newspaper displaying President Truman’s decision to pursue racial integration of the armed forces.

Sanders is a longtime supporter of LGBT rights and equality, voting against “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” in 1993, originally intended as a compromise between lifting the military’s longstanding ban on gay service members and allowing gay individuals to serve openly. It was repealed to finally allow LBGT members to serve openly in 2010.
