D.C.-based Police Foundation to probe Charlotte police

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department on Wednesday asked the Police Foundation to grade the agency on its handling of a recent officer-involved shooting.

The independent, nonpartisan organization is located in Washington, D.C., and will review the policies and procedures officers followed in the immediate aftermath and weeks following Keith Lamont Scott’s death on Sept. 26.

The Police Foundation will also look into the department’s relationship with the community, asking residents for feedback on how to improve the dynamic between the public and law enforcement.

The foundation has recommended changes for other police departments in the country, including St. Louis County, Missouri, following the Ferguson riots and death of Michael Brown. But Police Chief Kerr Putney said he will carefully consider the D.C. organization’s recommendations before swapping them for current policy.
