An Asian man was seen on video defending himself from an attacker in Oakland, California, who was reportedly trying to mug him.
“The perpetrator was sitting on top of the victim, holding him down physically and landing blows to his face, his chest, and the victim was struggling, screaming for help,” witness Angela Chuk said. “It lasted maybe 20 to 30 seconds, as we were yelling for him to stop.”

The video shows the 57-year-old victim throwing punches at the attacker as he laid on his back in an incident that occurred on Saturday before 7:30 a.m.
At one point, the victim gets up off the ground and chases the attacker across the street. The attacker then gets into his car and drives off.
The victim said he was on his way to get a cup of coffee and added the attacker did not get a hold of his wallet. The victim was left with bruising and swelling to his face.
The two witnesses of the attack, who are sisters, said they called 911 and tried to distract the perpetrator by banging on their second-story window and yelling. They also helped the man fill out a police report, as he only speaks Cantonese.
“It was chilling. It was disturbing. It was unthinkable. It was horrifying,” Chuck said.

The suspect is at large, but the Chucks said they hope the video will help identify him.
The incident comes amid growing concern over anti-Asian hate crimes in the United States, with New York City and Los Angeles seeing the greatest spikes.
