More than 1.11 million residents in New Mexico will begin receiving direct payments in the coming days as an effort by the state government to offer relief amid inflation.
The rebate comes from a law passed this year to provide stimulus rebates to families amid rampant inflationary pressures pinching pocketbooks across the nation. To receive a payment, residents of New Mexico first had to file their 2021 New Mexico income taxes and meet the necessary income threshold.

Thousands of New Mexicans will be eligible to receive up to $1,500 in rebates regardless if they filed taxes for the previous economic year and will receive the payments in two installments. The payments are just one of several approved rebates passed by the governor and state legislature earlier this year.
“This summer we’ll be returning hundreds of millions of dollars in relief to families around New Mexico, protecting their paychecks and helping them cope with the rising prices of gas, groceries and other household expenses,” said Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham.

For residents who have filed taxes, a tax rebate of $500 will be made available to single filers or married people who filed separately, and $1,000 will be sent out to joint filers. For those who did not file taxes, $1,000 will be made available for married couples or single people with one or more dependents and $500 for households with single individuals without dependents.
Payments will begin in the coming days and will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.
