The D.C. area is in for a rough Saturday as a cold front and powerful storms sweep through the region, the National Weather Service said.
“Storms will be severe, with damaging winds the biggest threat,” forecasters wrote in a hazardous weather outlook Friday afternoon.
The forecast for Saturday calls for showers and thunderstorms after 5 p.m., with gusts reaching 26 mph.
Washington, though, is poised to have a better day meteorologically than the rest of the Northeast.
Although the federal Storm Prediction Center warned of a “slight” risk ?– 20 percent ?– of severe weather in the D.C. region, it slapped a “moderate” risk designation on a region spanning from northern Maryland to New Hampshire. The moderate risk zone, which indicates a 45 percent probability of severe weather, also includes broad swaths of New York and Pennsylvania.
Temperatures in the D.C. area are poised to fall after Saturday’s system rolls through. Sunday will bring sunny skies with a high of about 77 degrees. The mercury will cross the 80-degree threshold on Wednesday.
