Staph cause of charter school closing

D.C.’s Arts & Technology Academy on Tuesday closed due to a reported case of staph infection, a day after SEED Public Charter School closed for the same reason.

Nona Richardson, spokeswoman for the D.C. Public Charter School Board, told The Examiner the Arts & Technology student did not have to be hospitalized and did not have the more worrisome MRSA strain of the disease. Yet school leaders at the Blaine Street site opted to shut their doors through Thursday in order to clean the premises. A student at SEED Public Charter School in Southeast was treated at a local hospital for a staph infection, which caused administrators to send children there home on Monday.

Last Friday, D.C. Public Schools officials announced that a teacher at Davis Elementary School in Southeast also had contracted a staph infection. Montgomery County Public Schools reported 21 cases of staph Tuesday, up from 19 a day earlier. Of those, 10 are active cases, said schools spokeswoman Kate Harrison.
