Police question if Mount Vernon assaults are related

Police commanders on Wednesday aired doubts about whether a string of sexual assaults in the Mount Vernon area are related, according to sources inside the police department.

Police officials said they are still seeking two men for questioning in the assaults, which included a Sept. 16 rape at the rear of 508 Cathedral St., but are now doubting if the suspects committed multiple offenses, sources said.

Baltimore Police Commissioner Frederick Bealefeld declined to answer questions about the cases after a Wednesday meeting of the Baltimore City Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.

Police spokesman Sterling Clifford said it took officials a while to alert the public to the crimes, because they didn’t have solid sketches of the suspects.
