‘Probably won’t happen’: Trump gives Democrats another chance to fix immigration and asylum laws

President Trump expressed doubt that congressional Democrats would use the next two weeks to construct improvements to current asylum and immigration legislation, in a Sunday morning tweet.

Following weeks of rumors that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would begin deporting illegal immigrants, Trump confirmed via Twitter late last week that the raids would begin on Sunday. Late on Friday, Trump announced that the raids would be delayed two weeks, giving Democrats in Congress time to comply with his many requests to amend asylum law loopholes that he has frequently cited as “ridiculous.”

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., called Trump on Friday evening, urging him not to go through with the raids, according to a report from CNN. Trump tweeted later that evening that he would grant a further two weeks for Congress to “get together and work out a solution.”

After the announcement that he had given Democrats a new deadline to prevent deportation by working with their Republican counterparts, the president tweeted Sunday morning, “I want to give the Democrats every last chance to quickly negotiate simple changes to Asylum and Loopholes. This will fix the Southern Border, together with the help that Mexico is now giving us. Probably won’t happen, but worth a try. Two weeks and big Deportation begins!”
